FALL 2009

FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL:

ENDING JIM CROW

IN ALASKA

This program tells the true-life story of an extraordinary Alaskan woman who becomes an unlikely hero in the fight for civil rights. Elizabeth Peratrovich-a young, unassuming Tlingit Indian mother of three testified before the Alaska State Senate in 1945 and swayed the floor vote with her compelling testimony in favor of the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Bill, the first civil rights bill passed in the United States since the Civil War.

ETE PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE NEW CD RELEASE
FROM THE LEGENDARY RED LAKE SINGERS

The much-anticipated release of Old Times will take place during the Red Lake Nation Independence Day Celebration commemorating the signing of the 1889 Agreement on July 6-9, 2009 in Red Lake, Minnesota.

The Red Lake Singers are from the Red Lake Nation whose style of singing belongs to the genre well known throughout Indian Country as "pow wow music." The singers on Old Times are Dan Bellanger, Joe "Tiny" Bellanger, Johnny Smith, James "Gus" Strong, Peter Strong, Sr., and Willy Strong.

This new raw recording was produced to capture and preserve old songs and an "old style" of singing of the Ojibwe people at Red Lake, one of the most traditional Indian communities in the country. Songs on this recording were taught to the elder Red Lake Singers by their fathers, grandfathers, and uncles when they were young boys, as early as the 1920s.

From The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee

LP Health Alert / URGENT

From Kari Ann Cowan - Leonard's niece (my comments follow):

I received a disturbing call from Leonard today. He is now having blood in his urine and he desperately needs to have an oncologist examine him. A general practitioner operating in the prison system is not sufficient; he needs to be seen by a specialist.

Your support with letters and phone calls to the proper officials is greatly needed at this time.  The urgency is due to his previous scare of cancer.  Only a specialist can determine the state of his health.  According to his medical he is supposed to receive an exam every three months, but according to Leonard he has only been seen once a year.  How can this be?

As everyone knows one examination can give you warning, anyone who has had a prognosis or scare with prostate cancer, you need to see an oncologist and be examined regularly.  He has never received proper medical attentions for his medical problems, unless this problem is addressed by his supporters he will not get this matter taken care of.  As we found when he did not have his diabetic supplies last year, until the outcry was so great.  Then they could not deny him.

Please ask the warden at Lewisburg Prison to give Leonard Peltier the proper medical attention he has the right to.

Warden Bledsoe ~ Warden for Lewisburg Prison
The prison number is: (570) 523-1251 Fax:  570-522-7745 E-mail address: LEW/EXECASSISTANT@BOP.GOV Lets get him the treatment he deserves.

Kari Ann Assistant CoordinatorLeonard Peltier Defense Offense Committeecontact@whoisleonardpeltier.info

From Billie - I spoke with Leonard late this afternoon - he had still not seen any medical personnel. He was experiencing some discomfort at that time. Blood in urine is a warning sign that should never be ignored - even if it happens only once it is a sign of some kind of issue. Kari Ann is correct - he needs to see a physician and soon, and he needs to have a PSA test. I have called the prison already, and calmly spoke with 2 individuals. With your help we will get him medical care - thank you...

1680 PR opens US headquarters in Albuquerque

Posted on Jul 24th, 2009 by WayOfTheSpirit : WayOfTheSpirit WayOfTheSpirit

Story Published: Jul 16, 2009

Story Updated: Jul 10, 2009

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - American Indian-owned public relations, strategic marketing and talent management company 1680 PR has opened its United States headquarters at Albuquerque Studios.

Albuquerque and New Mexico have become a center for television and filmmaking because of incentives and rebates offered by the State of New Mexico.

Chairman Herman Gallegos, Jicarilla Apache, and Senior Communications Strategist Ken Lingad, Isleta Pueblo, are the core of the company, which formed out of a long working relationship between the two.

"1680 is blessed that our business model didn't call for any marketing," Gallegos said. "We opened the agency with clients in existence already. Everyone who is part of the company has been working independently in the field for 20 years. We would decide to come together on projects, like an informal think tank, for 20 years, brokering deals in strategic communications. We were always running in the same circles. Now we're working together as one."

Adaptation of Spirituality & living Green....

Posted on Jul 28th, 2009 by WayOfTheSpirit : WayOfTheSpirit WayOfTheSpirit
The worlds movement to reflect on thousands of years of damage done, may it be to our environment, humans or animals, is a staggering testament to the fact that indigenous ways, and the ways of cultures thought to be a multitude of undesirable things are in fact the mere mirrors of what is happening worldwide as an almost phenomena!

Native / Indigenous Cultures are being implemented added and brought into almost every aspect of marketable and "poineering" sourcing, from "The Green Movement" to Re-Newable Energy, to spiritual practices, to Entertainment, to overall lifestyle changes...

It is however truly unbelievable that through all of this, the bars are still not being raised to give due diligence, to openly showcase and implement openly the acknowledgment of this!

Most people in some form or fashion are taking on practices and ways of reasoning's that are fashioned from, Indigenous sources...may it be personal or business these days...

we would like you to consider this, think about your surroundings, your thinking, what you are applying to to your daily doings, the things you listen to, watch and use, and then understand that in this age we are utilizing and using what once was called a savage...animalistic, uneducated, heathen and non cultured,

way of life...While here please also consider helping pave the passage, for Indigenous people to get their due diligence...ask your local Network provider why there is no Native programming, why your local music store does not openly include Native American artists...check with any source that seems to be using Indigenous or native product where these products are actually made, or come from....

Become aware and pro active in not only using the mechanisms of native and indigenous ways...but to promote their ways, through their arts, education, media, entertainment and products...

consider doing business with natives, consider having them teach and speak at your schools, and universities, include them in your local line up of entertainment at events etc. give them work, buy their products, and most of all, truly get to know where
The reflection of a better world actually began!

I now leave you with some things that may initiate interest...

Parole Hearing for Leonard Peltier
In central Pennsylvania today, about 200 people gathered outside the walls of Lewisburg Penitentiary to support Native American activist Leonard Peltier during a parole hearing. Peltier has been serving out two consecutive life sentences for the murder of two FBI Agents: during a 1975 shootout on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation In South Dakota. Robin Carneen has more.

After serving 33 years behind bars, THE 64-year old Peltier has been granted his second parole hearing since 1993. He has maintained his innocence throughout his time in prison, and is considered by many to be a political prisoner. Peltier's attorney, Eric Seitz, says Peltier should be released, because he has already served his 30 year mandatory minimum sentence.

"He, by the Parole Commission's own standards and criteria has served all the minimum time that is required."

Numerous witnesses testified in favor of Peltier's release during the 4-hour hearing; and although the government is calling for him to remain in prison, the hearing is seen as Peltier's best chance in more than 30 years to be released. The hearing commissioner will make his recommendation within 48 hours, then the parole commission then has up to 21 days to make a decision

Robin Carneen, FSRN.

Friends,

Most of you know the saga of Leonard Peltier and the American Indian Movement in the 1970's. The question of who shot the two Federal Bureau of Intelligence Agents may never be known to anyone other than the shooter and the Creator. Today (July 28th.) Leonard Peltier has / had his first parole hearing. it is too late now to write letters for this hearing. What we can do, positive outcome for Leonard or not is to pray for Justice for All! If the hearing does not turn out in a positive way, we can and must write or call our Congressmen, Senators and even the White House to voice our opinion. Whether you are a Peltier supporter or not, Leonards trial was filled with so many questions and irregularities that his conviction was set before the trial. That is wrong no matter what the incident! I know "Justice For All" are just words but think, think hard about what those words mean! The weakest, poorest man or woman in our Country must have the same opportunity for Truth and Justice that the richest whiteman has. Nothing less is acceptable period!

We have to demand and pressure our Government to do the right thing. During the 1970's names like Communist and radicals were thrown around like seeds to the wind! Now it is "terrorists" that the Government uses to get us to believe through fear. Pogo was right, "we have met the enemy, and he is us"!

Unite and fight City Hall through involvement and letters! We all have computers type them up and save copies in word. Someday the government may come after those that disagree with them. I want people around to call for help when it happens! Look at the Jews, Gays, Catholics, non-Ariens under the Nazi rule. Can it happen? Did and will again if we let it!

Leonard Peltier Parole Hearing update

Posted on Jul 30th, 2009 by WayOfTheSpirit : WayOfTheSpirit WayOfTheSpirit
Brought to you by the Red Nation Society

News from Lewisburg

Greetings from Lewisburg, PA. As you know, Leonard's parole hearing was today. The attorney Eric Seitz is very hopeful about the outcome of the hearing. The government brought nothing new to the table and made it clear that their position is that LP should never be released despite his being eligible for parole. That, of course, is about nothing but revenge. Peter Matthiessen ("In the Spirit of Crazy Horse") was a witness today. He's attended many of the hearings, appeals, etc., over the years. He felt the examiner was attentive and open to what was being said on LP's behalf. He's also feeling positive. We're also told Leonard handled the Q&A (for about 45 minutes) very well. Unfortunately, there's nothing further to report. The examiner said he'd like some time before making a recommendation. We expect that Leonard will be notified of the recommendation within the next 24-48 hours. This is progress, folks.

Normally a denial is made and immediately, sometimes even before LP's lawyers have even finished their presentation. Overall, the feeling is that Leonard received a fair hearing. Keep up those prayers for a positive outcome. Ultimately, of course, the full Parole Commission will make the final decision. We'll keep you posted.

How Leonard Peltier could leave prison by August 18

July 30, 2009

For a formidable and growing global community of supporters, the prospect of Native American activist Leonard Peltier finally leaving prison inspires a longing that cuts to the depths of the soul.

So Peltier's first parole hearing of the Obama Era---on Tuesday, July 28---inspired hope of an intensity that will have a major impact on the new presidency. A decision must come from the Federal Parole Commission within three weeks. His attorney is calling for a surge of public support that would create an irresistible political climate for Leonard's release.

The relationship between Peltier and those who have followed his case over the decades can be intensely personal. His imprisonment has come to stand not only for five centuries of unjust violence waged against Native Americans, but also for the inhumane theft of the life of a man who has handled his 33 years in jail with epic dignity, effectiveness and grace.

Peltier's latest parole hearing convened at the federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where he is currently held. According to Eric Seitz, Peltier's Honolulu-based attorney, Peltier spoke for more than an hour "with great eloquence" about the nature of his case, his imprisonment and his plans for freedom. "The hearing officer seemed to listen carefully," said Seitz. "We thought it went very well."

The decision on Peltier's parole will be made by the four sitting members of the Federal Parole Commission (http://www.usdoj.gov/uspc/ ) whose offices are in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Commissioners Isaac Fulwood, Jr., Cranston Mitchell, Edward Reilly and Patricia Cushware are all Bush appointees. One seat is vacant; Fulwood was elevated to the Chairman's seat in May by President Obama.

According to Seitz, the hearing was taped by an officer charged with reporting to the Commissioners within 48 hours. The Commissioners are required to render a decision within 21 days---by August 18. Should they rule in his favor, Peltier could walk out of prison very soon after the decision is issued.

Should the Commssioners turn down his parole application, Seitz says the appeal would go to the federal district court in Harrisburg. The report of the hearing would become available to Peltier and the public.

Seitz said he spoke to the record for about 20 minutes on the legalities of the case. He said Peter Mattheissen, author of IN THE SPIRIT OF CRAZY HORSE, explained the history of the 1970s incidents that led to Peltier being accused of murdering two FBI agents. CRAZY HORSE is the definitive account of the origins of the case and of the climate of violence and repression imposed on the native community at the time of the killings. Seitz said Mattheissen emphasized "the many reasons to have misgivings about whether the system performed well and fairly in Leonard's case."

Mattheissen was joined by Dr.Thomas Fassett of the United Methodist Church, who testified, said Seitz, "to the negative impact of Peltier's 33-year imprisonment on the world's view of how the US government treats its native population. Leonard's case is viewed in the larger community both nationally & internationally as a major embarrassment...as a gross injustice...a black mark."

The testimony was accompanied by thousands of letters, with signees including South African Bishop Desmond Tutu, US Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI), and actor Robert Redford, whose film INCIDENT AT OGALALA is the definitive documentary.

Cynthia Maleterre of the Turtle Island Clan then outlined how Peltier could meet the requirements of parole in his home community in North Dakota. Restored to his Chippewa-Dakota homeland, Maleterre explained that Peltier would have housing, a job and be surrounded by family, including great-grandchildren he has never seen.

Seitz said testimony opposing parole came from a representative of the FBI, sent by Director Robert Mueller, a holdover Bush appointee, and from the former director of the Minnesota Bureau. Two sons of Jack Coler, one of the FBI agents killed in the Ogalala shoot-out, also argued against Peltier being freed, as did a former agent named Ed Woods.

Seitz said that all those opposing parole argued Peltier should spend the rest of his days in prison, and did not deserve a new trial.

But Seitz was "guardedly optimistic" about a favorable decision from the Parole Commission. He said that a "good rapport" had been established with the hearing officer, and that the new chair of the commission is generally held "in high esteem."

President Barack Obama does have the power to grant clemency, but Seitz said prisoners apply only when all other avenues have been exhausted. Usually, says Seitz, "presidential pardons do not come until the Chief Executive is leaving office."

Seitz says letters to the Parole Commission and to local newspapers, calls to Congressional Representatives (202-224-3121), talk show hosts and other forms of public pressure are now of the utmost importance. The hope, he says, lies in creating a "public environment favorable to release."

As Leonard Peltier approaches his 65th year---having spent half his life in prison---every day is now critical to lifting this burden from our collective souls.
