SBA's Clara Pratte: A Woman with an Agenda

By Michelle Tirado

In mid-May, the U.S. Small Business Administration welcomed Clara Pratte as the national director of its Office of Native American Affairs.

Pratte, 30 and a member of the Navajo Nation, came to the post with a degree from the University of Arizona and several years of business and economic development experience, both in the tribal and federal government sectors, and she plans on putting it all to good use.

During her third week on the job, we spoke to Pratte about her agenda, what she hopes to accomplish in the coming months and years to enhance the office, which is staffed by three, and assist Native American entrepreneurs and businesses.

AIR: What in your career best prepared you for this role?

Pratte: I think there are a couple of things in my career that prepared me for this role. I would say the first thing was doing small business exporter counseling with the Department of Commerce Trade Information Center. In that capacity, we had so many different businesses with a variety of experience coming to us for help with export counseling, ... So, sort of walking them through the steps of what they needed to do just to start their own business. And most of these folks were [from] rural America. ...

My father was a small business owner not far from the reservation and he had always talked about possibly opening businesses up on the reservation. But from a young age, I can remember there being some impediments to opening up a business, whether it was from the tribal side or the federal side or the BIA [Bureau of Indian Affairs] side - just a myriad of jurisdictional issues. ...

But then working directly for my tribe was probably the most helpful. I worked for the Navajo Nation Washington Office here in D.C. for the last couple of years doing economic development and really looking at it from the tribal perspective on: What were the Navajo Nation's internal processes that were impeding entrepreneurship? And what were the external stopgap measures that were available and how could we utilize them - from the federal government as well as local and state?

AIR: What was one of the first things tackled or accomplished when you came on board?

Pratte: Well, it is week three, and one of the big things I am trying to do right now - and it is done, we just need to get clearance and get it taken care of - is our Web presence. Right now, our online Web presence for the Office of Native American Affairs is pretty static. [The Web site] does not have a whole lot of information on it. ... I am working ... on getting that to be a little bit more fleshed out; more programmatic features; letting people know exactly why this office exists, what we do here and how we can assist entrepreneurship in Native America.

AIR: What is on your agenda over the next few months?

Pratte: We have a couple of programs that were started by my predecessor, Mr. Bill Largent. One of them is the Tribal Self-Assessment Tool that was due to be completed by the end of September. One of my big goals is getting that completed, out the door, ready for tribes to utilize. ...

Another thing I am looking at is really identifying the target market that SBA has hit in Indian Country. I think we have had some successes out there with getting the word out on what SBA can do. But there are certainly pockets of the population that we have not reached, either through marketing or through outreach - we just have not been able to reach them. So, really looking at those populations that have no idea what SBA does, who we are, what this office can do, the lending programs that we have, the Surety Bond Guarantee Program. Now, we have this ARC [America's Recovery Capital] loan under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that people can take advantage of. ...

AIR: Over the long term, what will be your priorities?

Pratte: As Administrator Mills is putting out her objectives, we certainly want to keep in line with those to make sure that we are all moving in the same direction. Some of the things that we have been talking about are things like telemedicine, the business implications for telemedicine, and health IT records. ...

Another long-term goal is accessing the 8(a) program. That is something that has come up time and time again from the consultations that have been held in the past as well as [from] some interest groups that I have spoken to in the last couple of weeks ... that the application process has been hard to navigate. So, long-term goal: I really want to make sure that we make that as approachable and user-friendly as possible for the Native community.

Clinton Global Initiative Brings Native American Focus to the World

By Kimberly Hayes

Investing in rural development around the world is not only good philanthropy, it can be a good business investment that will prevent a future economic crisis, according to a panel of development experts at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting in New York in September.

Tribal community development financial institutions (CDFIs) are an excellent example of how this model can be successful, according to a Native American financial expert on the panel. "Native people have been handed poor policies by the federal government, but the opportunities are there now to grow beyond that," Elsie Meeks, president and CEO of Oweesta, told attendees and fellow panelists.

"The private sector is getting a start on reservations, mostly through CDFIs. Community development leads people to wealth creation," Meeks said. "This can seem like an odd goal when you are seeing people that are very dependant and very poor. But we have to think not just about immediate needs, but look to the future and wealth creation."

Oweesta provides training, capacity building and technical assistance services. During the Global Impact of Rural Innovation session, Meeks discussed poverty in Native communities with an international audience that may have been unfamiliar with the topic.

CGI was started by former President Bill Clinton and the William J. Clinton Foundation in 2005 as "... a call for action that brings together a community of global leaders from various backgrounds to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges."

President Clinton noted in opening remarks that, despite current economic problems, rural development is important, and wealthy countries and donors should not learn the wrong lesson. Rural investment strategies are not the cause of these financial problems; they have a real rate of return. Panelists noted that current problems could turn into an opportunity to develop good financial practices in rural areas, which lend themselves to commercial enterprise solutions.

The success of CDFIs in Native communities is part of those commercial solutions. "We have had to practice safe and sound policies and practices," Meeks said. "I don't know any CDFIs that have lost money - they have all earned a rate of return."

(NEW YORK) June 11, 2009 - The ADCOLOR® Industry Coalition is proud to announce Hispanic media mogul Cristina Saralegui as the 2009 ADCOLOR® Awards All-Star Honoree. Each year, the ADCOLOR® Awards celebrates outstanding achievements by diverse professionals in advertising, marketing and media. Past "All-Star Honorees" include Russell Simmons of RUSH World Synergies and Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jr. of Magic Johnson Enterprises. This year's ADCOLOR® Awards will be hosted by CNN's Soledad O'Brien and will take place on Sunday, October 4 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix.

The ADCOLOR® Awards -- presented by Arnold Worldwide, CNN, Google, Microsoft Advertising, and Omnicom Group - serve as the official kick-off of the ANA's Multicultural Marketing & Diversity Conference at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix (Oct. 4 - Oct. 6), which is attended by leaders in multicultural marketing, media and advertising industries.

"I'm honored to be receiving the 2009 ADCOLOR All-Star Award that recognizes the transformative effect that people of color have had in the media, marketing and advertising worlds," said Saralegui. "In receiving this award, my hope is that I can continue to inspire young and talented people of color to break stereotypes and glass ceilings!"

Saralegui's unparalleled achievements span over three decades that started in 1979 when Helen Gurley Brown tapped her to become the editor of Cosmopolitan en Español. She resigned her post at Cosmo in 1989 to start her own talk show-"The Cristina Show"-- on Univision and since then this Hispanic media legend has built an empire that includes her own media and licensing company, Cristina Saralegui Enterprises, Inc (CSE); Blue Dolphin Studios, a Miami-based television production facility; a home furnishings collection entitled Casa CristinaTM; and an AIDS awareness foundation called "Arriba la Vida/Up with Life Foundation."

Tiffany R. Warren, Founder of ADCOLOR® and Chief Diversity Officer for Omnicom Group, Inc., is "thrilled to honor Cristina by celebrating her achievements and great works amongst her peers in advertising, marketing and media. ADCOLOR's mission is to acknowledge the richness that comes from diverse professionals who have reached back as they have risen up. We will continue to recognize professionals from all ethnic backgrounds and are very pleased to be honoring such a recognized figure in the Hispanic world."

Are You a Great Story Teller?

Posted on Jun 11th, 2009 by WayOfTheSpirit : WayOfTheSpirit WayOfTheSpirit
Are You a Great Story Teller?
There's 1 Last Week to Win US $5000

Last week we announced our Tell a Story Contest. There are tons of great entries .(see sidebar for links to some of the front-runners) Now we are extending the deadline to June 19th, so if you want to get in on the action, you still have time to make your masterpiece!

Enter the contest here by uploading your presentation and checking the 'Join Fuze Tell A Story Contest' checkbox.

Even if you think you don't have a story to tell, you can vote for your favorites and help them win. Just hit the 'vote up' button below an entry.

Find out about how to enter here.

Finally, a note of thanks to our sponsor: Fuze Meeting. They have a new online meeting service that allows you to present your content online in beautiful HD quality. Go check them out.

Upload Your Audio to SlideShare, make Slidecasts & Webinars

Did you know that adding audio to your presentation can get you up to twice as many views? That's because when you add audio, your viewers get the whole presentation, including what you said on each slide. Having audio also makes your presentation more likely to go viral.

Earlier, the biggest problem with making a slidecast or webinar was finding a place to host the audio. But now you can host your mp3 directly with SlideShare with file size limits).

For more info on creating slidecasts and webinars hosted on SlideShare, go here. To get started with adding audio, go to the Edit page for any of your presentations.

From our CEO's desk:
Books in presentation format
(An occasional article from our CEO: Rashmi Sinha)

Tim O'Reilly and Sarah Milstein's new Twitter Book made me realize how the presentation format suits some books perfectly.

When the material is visual, text is sparse, and material needs be easily skimmed, then a presentation format makes a lot of sense.

Should you be considering the presentation book format? Maybe you have a series of talks that you want to work into a book? Why not make it a presentation book?

Tell us what you think? Post a comment on my blog post.

The Public Theater NY and Native American Entertainment

Posted on Jun 23rd, 2009 by WayOfTheSpirit : WayOfTheSpirit WayOfTheSpirit

We are delighted to announce that we have joined the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in a co-commission of Native playwright Rhiana Yazzie.  When OSF approached us about joining them in asking Rhiana to write a play for their American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle project, we were excited for the opportunity to develop a new piece with Rhiana and eagerly agreed.  Further details about the commission can be found in the OSF press release pasted below.

We are now accepting applications for our third Emerging Writers Group and encourage any early career playwrights in the New York area to apply. More information about the program can be found at http://www.publictheater.org/content/view/88/155/. The application deadline is August 28, 2009.

And we hope to see many of you here at Amerinda's reading of William S. Yellow Robe Jr.'s THIEVES tomorrow (Tuesday, June 23) at 8pm.  Admission is free; please RSVP to amerinda@amerinda.org or (212) 598-0968.

All the best,

Liz

OSF COMMISSIONS SECOND ROUND OF ARTISTS FOR U.S. HISTORY CYCLE

Co-Commission with The Public Theater is included

Ashland, Ore.- Alison Carey, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's director of American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle, and Artistic Director Bill Rauch announced today the second round of theatre artists to be commissioned for the 37-play, 10-year History Cycle, the largest commissioning and production project in the Festival's 73-year history.

The commissioned artists are: Young Jean Lee, Korean-born playwright and director, who was named by American Theatre magazine as one of the 25 theatre artists who will shape American theatre in the next 25 years; Universes, a touring ensemble company of writers and performers who fuse poetry, theatre, jazz, hip-hop, politics, blues and Spanish Boleros to create theatrical works-core members include Steven Sapp, Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, Gamal Chasten and Ninja (William Ruiz); and in a co-commission with the Public Theater, Rhiana Yazzie, award-winning Navajo playwright whose recent work includes Rainbow Crow and Las Madres.

"These deeply gifted artists bring new perspectives and artistic styles to the Cycle and continue to deepen this portrait of our nation," Carey said. "We are thrilled to introduce their work to OSF's audience."

"We are overjoyed that OSF will have the opportunity to work with these newly-commissioned artists," Rauch said, "and we are delighted to be collaborating with The Public Theater, a theater noted for its steadfast support of Native American work. We recognize that this is one of the ways that the United States History Cycle can have an impact throughout the nation."

As with previous commissions, the exact stories these artists will tell is not yet determined. "We are following the inspiration and insight of the artists in all aspects of the project," said Carey. "We look forward to learning what stories the artists will be exploring as the project unfolds."

Last year, OSF announced the commissioning of Culture Clash (Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza), David Henry Hwang, Lynn Nottage, Suzan-Lori Parks, Robert Schenkkan, Naomi Wallace, and the collaborative team of Jonathan Moscone and Tony Taccone.

The first of the History Cycle commissions will be produced at OSF in 2010 for its 75th anniversary. American Night, by Culture Clash, will open in the New Theatre on July 4th weekend and run through October. Written with humor and compassion, the play follows the journey of one immigrant, who studies to take his American citizenship exam with such fervor and determination that he finds himself involved in momentous historical moments.

The plays of American Revolutions will look at moments of change in America's past, helping to establish a shared understanding of our national identity and illuminate the best paths for our nation's future.

American Revolutions, inspired by the scale and scope of Shakespeare's history cycle of plays, will bring together more than 100 artists, historians and institutions from around the country. Up to thirty-seven new plays are slated to result in up to 15 full productions at OSF between 2010 and 2019. Every work commissioned, even if it does not receive a full production, will be presented to OSF audiences through workshops or readings.

American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle has been made possible through grants from The Collins Foundation and The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. Both grants are for three years:  2008, 2009 and 2010. The Universes commission is supported by a grant from The Nathan Cummings Foundation.

Cycle director Alison Carey is co-founder with Bill Rauch of Cornerstone Theater Company, which works with diverse American communities. As Cornerstone's resident playwright, she wrote more than 25 of the company's productions for stages across the country.

The Public Theater (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director; Andrew D. Hamingson, Executive Director) was founded by Joseph Papp in 1954 and is now one of the nation's pre-eminent cultural institutions, producing new plays, musicals, and productions of classics at its downtown and at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The Public's mandate to create a theater for all New Yorkers continues to this day onstage and through extensive outreach and education programs. Each year, over 250,000 people attend Public Theater-related productions and events at six downtown stages, including Joe's Pub, and Shakespeare in the Park. The Public has won 42 Tony Awards, 149 Obies, 40 Drama Desk Awards and four Pulitzer Prizes. www.publictheater.org.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

To our Indigenous brothers and sisters, the caretakers of the Peruvian Amazon, and to the citizens of the world,

News of the Bagua massacre has saddened our hearts. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the people of Peru, the families, and the friends of those who have been hurt and those whose lives have been taken. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you stand united through peaceful protests against corporate and political corruption, and the desecration of land and life.

We are happy to hear that efforts by the Indigenous peoples in Peru and their supporters have lead to the reversal of two unjust laws, however seven laws still remain. We call upon our sisters and brothers from around the world to help support our relatives in South America by sending a message to the Peruvian Government.

The US - Peru Free Trade Agreement FTA is not a legal tool to attack Indigenous communities; violence is not the way to promote trade and progress. Please request that the Obama administration take a stand in defense of Indigenous peoples' human rights in Peru. Encourage President Barack Obama, Congress members, and State Secretary Hillary Clinton to urge the government of Peru to comply with the labor and environmental rights regulations included in the Peru FTA, which President Obama praised during his campaign.

We recommend that the media fully cover, in depth, the struggle of Indigenous peoples on the front lines of climate change. For they are protecting the world's last remaining wild-places, which are essential to the survival of life on earth. All life is connected. All life is sacred.
