Documentary on Native American

Polka Music Debuts on PBS in April

Among the swaying giant arms of the saguaro cactus and clouds of dust that drift along isolated roads in southern Arizona is a soothing rhythm, a sound so distinct and stimulating that it arouses both the heart and soul.

Central European immigrants brought polka music to America in the mid-19th century but here among the O'odham nations Akimel and Joaquin Brothers [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102530714609&s=4101&e=001SlPouFpFoQotmEk0CMzRYBQmhFDQjbwt6PK_v_YKPjaohOtQzrgsdsRFS7tIejEsh6DrWArvG8uZtkwbefNycW2gi4ILsXc9kgESPW1KTqqFuXox5VqLWn1kQyHwB0N-Qpv1LpmC8R2DgrfJdirDOTLFekcTsAvV]Tohono

tribal members have made the mixture of accordions, saxophones and percussion all their own.

Taken from the word baila, which means dance in Spanish, Akimel and Tohono people have created waila, a form of music that embodies polka, waltz and Mexican music, tejano, cumbias and Norteno, creating a vibrant, whimsical tone.

The history of the music and its founding fathers are the subject of a new documentary for public television, Waila! Making the People Happy, a co-production of Daniel Golding and the Independent Television Service. The film was produced in association with Eight/KAET and Native American Public Telecommunications.

Waila! is being released to PBS stations across the nation starting in April. PRESENTS:

WE SHALL REMAIN

We Shall Remain [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102530714609&s=4101&e=001SlPouFpFoQr1WXsh1YAoe6x5ps-s1WahV81RWbzDs4e78mCWvuOOIz4dZc1fbFb3IX5SDITO039RN47mITi9jst5P55HI7Cr-G1tAND4oLu0A0La3Id310rOmhPBTC2YFH9t-ReBE4APO2JRgG96-A==]

Five 90-minute documentaries spanning 300 years tell the story of pivotal moments in U.S. history from the Native American perspective:

EPISODE 1: After the Mayflower [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102530714609&s=4101&e=001SlPouFpFoQpCPSX1iwzE9bqkNKv8PLZR_XjR_GDiqhKVfAjcga48AgtmVHudSpXvgq-o3Nm8QjQmizeGyzhZkX6yhanpjSwd29d32ysrHs2J8QKG6Gqof5u8eI5hhBSYCrp6V5dnm4Z_i0GA2I02EUtTztJ8eyPcNDmlyhPZbaCqWlciM8eosg==]

In 1621, the Wampanoag of New England negotiated a treaty with Pilgrim settlers.

A half-century later, as a brutal war flared between the English and a confederation of Indians, this diplomatic gamble seemed to have been a grave miscalculation.

EPISODE 2: Tecumseh's Vision [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102530714609&s=4101&e=001SlPouFpFoQrCNf18QahFtDHXlIzEu5yRHOBHTGqvlmlxnh3lRay8uvPnM9mxnr-ucFujuRAaDi_AUa9h8bbr3Qm24gFAIc653xCBmsStOixhUyvIavG9f8wLPbTfE0j82R5-5rk1OMj_d-ITII9tI_gLI7TyXuVRn6mrEq00_Pql7yOhe6FuXg==]

In the course of his brief and meteoric career, Tecumseh would become one of the greatest Native American leaders of all time, orchestrating the most ambitious pan-Indian resistance movement ever mounted on the North American continent.

EPISODE 3: Trail of Tears [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102530714609&s=4101&e=001SlPouFpFoQowSLr4AriAYDd2AkcPG7oo8ZayqGGZYx6eFyI8G_Z2PdekfhDK0lPMI-9syLooO_hLB_nMFhej78mNKEAcYsE7aiQQsDRcqPCaCc9nO4yf2DXPl_UpmxpHPJiqjnCeojxtMNggdfg4ksP7DLDza6ur9ns8VAMFN5LDuSfZXo47dg==]

Though the Cherokee embraced "civilization" and won recognition of tribal sovereignty in the U.S. Supreme Court, their resistance to removal from their homeland failed.

Thousands were forced on a perilous march to Oklahoma.

EPISODE 4: Geronimo [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102530714609&s=4101&e=001SlPouFpFoQprbZNbFi7mMIEeXqKc_up_lC75j5yt96DkZ5ZYkL98f8gd16Ync8xSHHpl-FbMDqbxT16wQ1AYasiWQxNkV9T_bP7ON7WHifCR_x7mTIouUtkQqWY3d7VD1HP5joTq_NsQuXgwVAn8nJnWtMTpxQncNw0wjaWDIR34k9-Zh2kF_A==]

As the leader of the last Native American fighting force to capitulate to the U.S.

government, Geronimo was seen by some as the perpetrator of unspeakable savage cruelties, while to others he was the embodiment of proud resistance.

EPISODE 5: Wounded Knee [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102530714609&s=4101&e=001SlPouFpFoQrVqdGi9Mto-BT5wqb49Gk1iXJOCm1GRZ9ycfa3eop6PTRaYK-KVo38QHehLIWymIsYJ69GGq745T6dbdWqCf1flFDbt4xG_xV2PL7KYJuXZCa70G3yD3MgLXOLTafrDjHIxKXXxpeNGBBqy7OwD9-wHKDXU9sj4msf3mMec-IVpg==]

In 1973, American Indian Movement activists and residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation occupied the town of Wounded Knee, demanding redress for grievances. As a result of the siege, Indians across the country forged a new path into the future.

INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS

Posted on Apr 14th, 2009 by WayOfTheSpirit : WayOfTheSpirit WayOfTheSpirit

WIFE SWAP, ABC'S HIT PRIMETIME SHOW, SEEKS SUPERSTAR FAMILIES OF INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS!

The premise of Wife Swap is that one parent from each household swaps places for a week to experience how another family lives.  It is an incredible family experience and opportunity to both learn and teach different family values.

Wife Swap is a fascinating story of what happens when two couples see themselves and their partners in a whole new light. The New York Post says, "It should be called 'Life Swap' because it's not just the wives who learn something here. It's the families."

Potential families can live anywhere in the United States, but we ask that families applying for the show consist of two parents and have at least one child, age 7 or older, living at home. Specifically, I'm looking for families of independent film makers!  If you, along with your family, are hustling in the independent film scene, then I want to talk to you! To submit for the show please email a family photo and description to: gaby.wifeswap@gmail.com.

Each family that tapes an episode of Wife Swap receives a financial honorarium as compensation for their time.   Anyone who refers a family that appears on our program receives $1000 as a 'thank you' from us.

If you are a family unit (two parents and children between the ages of 7 and 17) who love an adventure, I would love to hear from you today! Also, please feel free to send this casting along to any families you feel would be appropriate!

More information is available at: http://abc.go.com/primetime/wifeswap.

Radio Project Brings Modern Voices to History Series

It was only 20 years ago when poet, professor and musician Joy Harjo went to a gathering to discuss the Columbus quincentenary and heard an indigenous Bolivian woman say she was stunned to discover indigenous people still existed in the U.S. and Canada.

"She stood up and said, 'We all welcome you and we're really surprised to see you and so many people from North America because'--and she wasn't joking--'we all thought that John Wayne had killed all of you," Harjo (Muscogee) said.

As the series We Shall Remain using such imagery debuts on PBS' American Experiencetonight, a companion radio piece also rolls out today, which Native people say works to balance the historic visuals with sounds and conversation from contemporary people and culture--the remain part in We Shall Remain.

WRITERS MENTORING PROGRAM
NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR
THE 2009 - 2010 SESSION

Applications are now being accepted for the seventh session of the CBS Diversity Institute's Writers Mentoring Program. Please note the submission period is earlier this year, March 1, 2009 - May 1, 2009.

The Writers Mentoring Program helps aspiring writers to break in and move up in the business. Each participant is matched with two mentors - one is a senior level writer/producer on a CBS or CW primetime series, the other is a CBS, CW or Paramount TV creative executive. Participants meet regularly with their mentors for advice and support on improving their writing skills as well as career advice and guidance.

With a total of 33 graduates in its first five years, the Program has launched 17 careers in episodic television.

The primary focus of CBS' Diversity Institute Writers Mentoring Program is to provide access and networking opportunities for talented and motivated diverse writers - with a focus on writers of color. The program is based in Los Angeles. It begins in September 2009 and runs through May 1, 2010.

The Writers Mentoring Program is not employment and there is no monetary compensation. It is, instead, a structured program of career development, support, and personal access to executives and decision-making processes; with the goal of preparing aspiring writers for later employment opportunities in television.

UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA - HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER DOCTOR BY DAY

AND AN AWARD-WINNING MUSICIAN EVERY CHANCE HE GETS

Darryl Tonemah, Ph.D, M.Ed aka Award-Winning Native Musician Tonemah Releases

Fifth CD "Ink Blots & Random Thoughts" at a CD Release Party in Norman, OK

"I remember sitting in the backseat of my parents' station wagon and hearing Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" for the first time. I was just a little boy, but that music stirred something in me. I knew right then that I needed to play music someday." --D. Tonemah

Norman, OK (April 27, 2009) -- Darryl Tonemah aka Tonemah had no idea that when he began writing songs while in college that several years later his singer/songwriting talent has lead him to hundreds of performances and garnered him award-nominations, radio, TV appearances, and awards. But it did! And now, four CDs later, Tonemah is poised to release his fifth CD "Inkblots & Random Thoughts" via an official CD release party, Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 7pm, at the Norman Santa Fe Depot, 200 South Jones Avenue, Norman, Oklahoma 73069.

No matter the number of degrees, awards or appearances, Tonemah still holds on to his small town Midwestern points-of-view that fuel his organic storytelling style; a storytelling style that has become his trademark.  Tonemah's life experiences of growing up on, and off, reservations coupled with his professional undertakings have given Tonemah a truly unique perspective that he brings to his songwriting.

When talking about what prompted the making of his latest CD "Ink Blots and Random Thoughts" Tonemah stated, "I have had the blessing of seeing and experiencing a lot of things since the last CD ("Welcome to Your Rainy Day") -- some great, some heartbreaking, some funny -- I had started writing song ideas, and lines, and chord progressions, and drum patterns on pieces of paper I had in my pocket; somehow, they all managed to end up in the back seat of my car...when I couldn't fit anything else back there, I figured it was time to record. Which was great...now, I have a new CD AND a clean car!"

As with Tonemah's previous releases, "Ink Blots & Random Thoughts," possesses Tonemah's honest singing style with honest lyrics that cut to the heart of the matter: "It is a challenge trying to put everything I want to say or express into a three minute song. I wanted to write this CD more efficiently than in the past. I thought it was important that each line was significant. Kind of like a movie short. In a movie short everything on screen has some symbolic value. I used a lot of metaphors while writing this CD to get the most mileage from each line."

Like his last CD, Tonemah made the trip to Nashville, TN to record "Ink Blots" allowing him to incorporate some of Nashville's finest session players and together they produced another truly heartfelt piece of music -- touching on feelings and experiences inherent in everyone. Tonemah is, at times; the Trickster; the son; the father; and, at times, the seeker - but he is always a storyteller. A storyteller, who offers meaning where the listener needs to find it. "In all the years I've performed with Darryl, one thing has always been evident, Darryl's songs touch people on a very personal level. You see it in their faces at every show. You hear it when they meet him afterward. People feel like they know him, and in a way they do." states Tonemah guitarist Ed Koban.

Tonemah has been receiving airplay in dozens of local markets throughout the US, Canada & even Alaska. A singer/songwriter in the purist sense, Tonemah combines the energy of rock, the intelligence of folk and the heart of country, to create a musical niche he calls, "Native Americana". In 2009 French record label, Dixie Frog Records, included the song "There's a Train" from the "Welcome to Your Rainy Day," as part of their compilation CD entitled, "Indian Reservation Blues," a multi-disc release that included other Native American Musicians.

Tonemah has three Bachelor's degrees and a Masters degree, as well as a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and Cultural Studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His undergraduate degrees are in Psychology, Sociology and Gerontology, and his Master's degree is in Community Counseling. He's the director of the Health Promotion Program at the University of Oklahoma College of Continuing Education

Tonemah's' live shows, full band electric or an intimate acoustic set, always finds him connecting with his audience. Whether reaching out to Native youth through his many workshops & speaking engagements, or pouring it all out on stage and in the recording studio, Tonemah's personality always shines through. Tonemah co- producer Larry Pacheco says it best; "During a recording project the artist usually brings ego, attitude or talent to the table, and rarely honestly lays it all out on the line. Working with Darryl Tonemah was different, he brought himself".
